Peddle Thorp Architects and ADCO Constructions have secured a prime soundscape for Victoria’s new Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, selecting Acoufelt’s highest performing acoustic panel to cover the ceilings across its “state of the art” indoor pool facilities.
Construction of the $57 million Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre commenced in 2019 as the centrepiece of La Trobe Valley Authority’s $85 million infrastructure package. The world-class centre offers facilities for competitive swimming, training and leisure, including an eight-lane 50m indoor pool, seating for 500 spectators, indoor water play zone, two water slides, learn-to-swim pool, 25m heated outdoor pool, cafe and retail precinct.
The combination of sound produced by swimmers and spectators paired with the interior’s hard tiling and concrete finishes were cause for acoustical concern. Peddle Thorp architects – familiar with addressing acoustics through their vast experience in recreation centre projects – lent on Acoufelt as a trusted supplier of functional and aesthetic-led acoustic products.
660 FilaSorb 30mm acoustic panels were selected for the project, specified to cover the ceiling above the facility’s main pools. The panels were installed using Acoufelt’s unique ‘EchoStrut’ framework, providing both structural support as well as adding a 20mm airgap to increase the panel’s Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) to greater than 1.0. The unique core construction of Acoufelt’s 30mm panels also offered benefits of high breathability and low moisture retention, both of which are vital considerations for aquatic projects.
