The acoustic problems with
meeting rooms

Hearing and understanding speech is integral to a productive meeting conversation. Generally, speech emits a volume of 60 dBA. times and creating echo.

With multiple individuals in a room, raised or amplified voices can increase to around 56-70 dBA. Coupled with hard interior surfaces, such as glass, marble, tiles or polished conrete, these voices then bounce around the room, increasing reverberation times and creating echo. Not only does this make for poor speech intelligibility and comprehension, but these now loud and reverberating sounds can also transmit into neighbouring meeting rooms. This can be both distracting for nearby occupants, as well as raise issues of privacy.

Excess sound and high reverberation times make for poor speech intelligibility and comprehension.

How to treat a noisy meeting room

A noisy meeting room or boardroom can be easily prevented or fixed by incorporating acoustic materials.

Acoufelt’s interior soundscaping products are designed for both aesthetics and acoustics, and can be installed in meeting rooms to absorb sound, reduce noise transmission, and lower reverberation times. Not only do Acoufelt offer a full suite of floor, wall, furniture and ceiling products, but we can also assist with acoustic consultations, delivery, installation, furniture removal, as well as a number of other services. We also offer custom designs across each of our collections.

Acoustic QuietBackâ„¢ Carpet Tiles

The floor often represents the largest practical surface for acoustic treatment. Installing acoustic carpet tiles can be advantageous in multi-level spaces to absorb sounds of footfall, as well as other mid-frequency sounds such as speech.

The highest performing commercially graded acoustic carpet tiles in the Acoufelt floor offering feature QuietBack™. Our QuietBack™ carpet tiles offer a minimum NRC range of 0.35-0.40 and are offered across a range of designs, colorways and thicknesses. Our carpet tiles have also been designed to be comfortable underfoot, and have a backing made from minimum 80% recycled PET material.

Acoustic Wall Products

Walls offer an immense variety of opportunities for acoustic treatment with Acoufelt’s broad range of products, available in a multitude of sizes, colors, prints, cuts, and designs.

Depending on your acoustic and aesthetic needs, select from our full color panels, printed panels, wall tiles, and custom printed full color wall panels. Sheets of full color panels are effective for sound generated by voice, and should be installed to sit at or above head height. For the best acoustic results, install panels on two adjacent walls of a meeting room, at least 2 metres high.

Acoustic Ceiling Products

Depending on the ceiling system available to you, Acoufelt offers a mix of practical, easy-install acoustic ceiling products.

For rooms with a ceiling grid system, drop-in ceiling tiles are a simple but effective solution; available in both full color and printed options. For targeted noise control over boardroom tables, ceiling clouds or baffles can be hung directly above, offering a large surface area for acoustic absorption. High performing acoustic ceiling panels can also be stuck directly to the ceiling without sagging or drooping, offering an excellent NRC value of up to 0.85.

Selected in color ‘Barn Door’, WoodBeQuiet™ ceiling planks were installed directly above the central boardroom table. Achieving a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.45, the acoustic properties of the WoodBeQuiet™ product aid in absorbing excess noise for improved communication, focus and privacy; a benefit to all employees and users of the space.

Stepping inside the main meeting room at Husch Blackwell’s Pheonix branch, one can observe the subtle ‘Chevron’ pattern of Acoufelt’s acoustic Fracture Panels in color ‘Iris’. The color and texture of the panels provide a cool contrast against the warm finishes and rugged, desert outlook, as well as serve the functional purpose of absorbing excess sound created in the space.
